" TIGER’S TALE – VISIT TO TIGER RESERVES IN CENTRAL INDIA" Tapan K Chakravarty INDIA’S Tiger population today is around 4000 , out of which about 25 % ie over 1000 reside in Central India Tiger reserves in Tadoba – Andhari , Pench , Kanha , Bandavgarh , Satpura , Umred and others . Most reserves within few hours road journey from Nagpur . No wonder Nagpur is called the Tiger Capital of India . For quite sometimes , my wife and me were planning to visit some of the Central Indian reserves during the Pujas . Accordingly we selected two of the popular Tiger destinations namely Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve ( TATR) and Pench Tiger Reserve ( PTR) . Our 5 day trip was self organised , with all bookings like flight to Nagpur and back , stay in forest resorts , conveyances and Safari trips were done on line , weeks in advance and confirmed. Our D–day ( departure day) was Dasami evening of Oct 13 . With the setting sun and receding drumbeats of Ma Durga Bisarjan , leaving behind checked in early ( to avoid traffic jams and airport rush) we waited for our flight announcement . After sustaining the inevitable operational delay , the flight took off 45 minutes late and we reached Nagpur around midnight. Extremely well administered taxi booking system and taxi ride ensured our check in the Hotel without hassle . Oct 14 , at crack of dawn we were up from bed and readied our selves for boarding pre booked Huyndai Accent which reported on time around 7 AM . To ration on time , we had breakfast “a La “Maharashtran “ - smashed Bonda with Chutney and Poha , washed with typical “Highway Tea” , at a decent Dhaba – not without a short discourse on request from the customers on what’ s happening in Kolkata . We seemed to be at home with the Maharashtran crowd. Our driver seemed to have some urgent appointment with Tadoban Tigers , cruising at 120 -130 km / hour on a fairly congested but disciplined traffic on National Highway 44 when suddenly the car started to de- accelerated on its own and stopped . Back left Tire burst the driver gravely announced . The damaged tire replaced , I sternly told the driver to repair the stepney on priority as I did not want to take risk of being stranded with a breakdown in a tiger forest. The burst tire was so damaged , that it had to be dumped and a second hand tire was purchased . By 11 AM , covering 200 km , we entered the tiger country with visible changes in the scenery . Deep forest and Hills , with large water bodies and a lake dominated the landscape . Normal street noise vanished and very few people found on road . Both sides of the road were dotted with” Jungle resorts” set among tall teak trees , thick under growths , shrubs and ferns . A non descript sign board partially covered by creepers announced , we reached our resort “ Tadoba Safari Stay Nature’s Sprout” , around 11 30 PM . Our safari was scheduled a 2: 30 PM and the entry gate to the reserve printed in the ticket . It is very important to book the resort and the entry gate simultaneously as TADOBA reserve has more than 10 gates , separated by long distances . We availed the MOHRALI Gate , which is the main entrance for the core area. All reserve forests have core and Buffer areas . Core areas are the areas where wild life consisting of the predators and preys are mostly concentrated . Buffer areas are surrounding areas where human habitation earlier existed , now relocated beyond buffer zone . So naturally chances of sighting Carnivorous predator like tigers and leopards are more in core areas. However this may not be sacrosanct . Many times tourists encountered tigers in peripheral areas but no sighting in core areas. Tiger sighting is 70% luck and rest Safari guide’s interpretation of jungle condition, pug marks ( tigers foot print) , Tigers droppings /potty, hardness and temperature of droppings, alarm calls of Langur and particular species of birds, smell of tiger urine etc. Absolute silence is essential . One must remember you are under constant surveillance by the tiger from the bush .No question of getting down from the Gypsy . Also photography by mobile cameras is strictly prohibited and mobile cameras need to be deposited at gate before entering the Park . Normal cameras are allowed with fees ( Rs 250 each). One can hire cameras of one’s choice at the gates. Tadoba – Andhari is a conjunction of two names . Tadoba from the local Gond tribal chief named Taru ,who fought and killed a tiger in this forest and assumed local God like status and Andhari ,
